چکیده

Abttract: Episodic Central Nervous System Ischemia of Undetermined Cause: Relation to Occult Left Atrial Myxoma • Left atrial myxoma should be considered seriously in patients with unexplained cerebral dysfunction, particularly those in whom there are multiple recurrent cerebral vascular episodes, despite the absence of suggestive heart findings. Substantiating this observation are two such illustrative cases with embolic disease leading to neurological involvement who otherwise lacked cardiac symptomatology and did not exhibit auscultatory, roentgenological or electrocardiographical evidence of heart disease. The first patient died without antemortem recognition of the tumor and, in the second, the myxoma was removed after eventual identification by cardiac angiography and histological examination of embolic material. Thus, it is recommended that left atrial myxoma be definitely sought by heart catheterization with contrast study as a potentially curable cause of chronic nervous system disease with transient episodes of vascular insufficiency even in patients without cardiac manifestations.

Central nervous embolism as an usual presentation of left atrial myxoma.

Sir, Cardiogenic embolism accounts for about 15% of all ischemic brain infarcts, and most often it is related to atrial fibrillation, valvular heart disease, or cardiomyopathy. In patients with acute ischemic stroke and concomitant atrial arrhythmias, the arrhythmia is often incriminated as the sole cause of these embolic episodes. However, these arrhythmias may be associated with structural he...

Atrial myxoma presenting with cerebral haemorrhage.

Emboli from left atrial myxomas are a recognized cause of cerebral ischaemia. The myxomatous embolus may infiltrate the cerebral arterial wall, resulting in aneurysmal dilatation with a risk of rupture. Myxoma-associated cerebral haemorrhage has been described in patients with progressive neurological dysfunction. We report a new presentation. Our patient, a previously healthy 20 year old girl,...

Gerstmann's syndrome: can cardiac myxoma be the cause?

Cardiac myxomas are primary cardiac tumours. Clinical presentations vary. Central nervous embolism has been a constant association. We describe a case of a 40-year-old female who presented with neurological signs and symptoms of Gerstmann's syndrome secondary to a left atrial myxoma.

Recurrent stroke in a case of left atrial myxoma masquerading vasculitis.

We report a case of left atrial myxoma presenting as recurrent neurological deficits with absent peripheral pulses mimicking systemic vasculitis. Due to absence of cardiac signs and symptoms, there was one year delay in diagnosis from initial symptom. Left atrial myxomas are rare but treatable cause of recurrent stroke.

Left Atrial Myxoma: A Rare Tumor in a Child

Atrial myxomas are uncommon in the pediatric population but are very important due to pursuant atrioventricular valve obstruction and systemic embolic events. Concerning multiple symptoms ranging from congestive heart failure to neurological deficits, the diagnosis of this disease is complicated. This paper reports a case of left atrium myxoma in a child treated with a surgical excision o...
